Seahawks DT Rocky Bernard - A Player They Should be KeepingWith free agency looming later this week, SHB takes a long hard look at the Seahawks free agents and makes a call on which ones the team should be looking to re-sign. The fact is, no one is irreplaceable on a 4-12 team, but there are a few guys who might be part of the rebuilding solution.
RESTRICTED:
LB Lance Laury – Sign him. He comes cheap and is a decent special teamer.
UNRESTRICTED:
DT Rocky Bernard – Sign him. Bernard is out of position at DT. He’d be a perfect 2-down DE against the run and could swing inside on passing downs. The team will make little effort to sign him though and Bernard is a perfect 3-4 DE. He’s gone but he shouldn’t be.

WR Bobby Engram – Sign him. The team needs bodies at the WR spot and Engram has been a real soldier for the cause.
WR Koren Robinson – Sign him. Again, he’ll come cheap and he deserves at least an invite to camp after contributing last year. He’s an excellent blocker in the run game.
LB Leroy Hill – Hill is already franchised at $8.3 million for this year. He’s not worth that, especially after being arrested for DUI a few weeks ago, but his loss would have left a gaping roster hole on a team with too many holes already. He’s not really worth more than $4.5 million a year in the current market, but why would he sign for that average unless he gets a lot more guaranteed on a long term deal? With one strike already in the NFL’s conduct policy, he’s not worth $12-$14 million guaranteed. Odds are this is a one year rental.
QB Charlie Frye – Let him go. The Seahawks are better off finding a younger guy with more upside.
DT Howard Green – Let him go. Green had a good camp but a non-descript season. Guys like him are a dime a dozen in the NFL.
TE Will Heller – See above. Find a younger player with more upside as a receiver.
LB D.D. Lewis – Sign him. Lewis is good spot fill-in and special teamer.
LB Wesly Mallard – Let him go. Find a younger LB to take the roster spot.
RB Maurice Morris – Dump him. He doesn’t do anything Julius Jones doesn’t do and he’s never been worth the roster spot he takes up. Give Justin Forsett or a rookie a shot.
RB Leonard Weaver – Sign him, but don’t break the bank. A better runner than blocker, Weaver should be getting the carries that TJ Duckett is hogging. Weaver is more versatile.
OL Steve McKinney – Let him go.
OL Ray Willis – Sign him. Willis has potential as the starting RT.
OL Floyd Womack – Sign him. He’ll be cheap and he stayed healthy for once, and the Seahawks need all the bodies on the OL they can get.
