Seahawks Should Keep Koren Robinson - For Now

K-Rob in his glory days as a Seahawk

As the Seahawks prep for this week's game against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, head coach Mike Holmgren mentioned in his Wednesday press conference that the team may now have too many receivers on the active roster, and may look to make a roster move as soon as this week. Speculation immediately turned to the idea that recently returned prodigal son Koren Robinson might be on the bubble because of sore knee suffered his first day of practice with the team 2 weeks ago. Since Robinson still is not practicing full time with the team as of Thursday, cutting Robinson might seem a real possibility. However, GM Tim "Timmay!" Numbskull said in an interview on Thursday that the team knew that injury was a possibility when they signed him, because Robinson wasn't in football shape yet and that he felt they needed to make sure all the receivers they had were healthy before letting anyone go.

This is good news, since we here at SHB believe that Robinson should be given at least four weeks to get into shape and contribute. The fact is, Robinson is a Pro Bowl kick returner and better than anyone the Seahawks have at that spot, so we favor patience and giving Robinson every chance to show his form. It would be a mistake to cut Robinson before we have a chance to see what he has left in the tank.

Numbskull has done a good job keeping the roster intact and finding players off the street to fill the WR spots that have been decimated by injury. Finding Billy McMullen and Keary Colbert (who the team really likes) would be offset by a black mark if the team gives up on K-Rob too soon. Robinson certainly has the talent to contribute as a kick returner, if not at WR. A starting line-up to Robinson at SE, Branch at Flanker and Engram in the slot, backed by McMullen, Colbert and Michael Bumpus wouldn't worry me at all heading into the second half of the season. If anyone needs to get cut, it should probably be Courtney Taylor, who still has practice squad eligibility and hasn't done a thing worth noting.

Let's hope the Seahawks give Robinson a chance to redeem himself. He must know this is his last chance.

BTW, according to the media, the outcome of this week's Seahawks-Giants game is foregone conclusion. We'll see. I've got a good feeling about this one, in spite of the fact it's on the East Coast at 10 in the morning.
