SHB Takes a Look @ The Final Roster

Promising Seahawks Rookie Justin Forsett

With final cutdowns fast approaching, it’s time for SHB to take a look at how we’d pare the roster, based on performances in the first three pre-season games and practice reports. We have 2 “wildcard” players listed for the final roster spot.

OFFENSE

Quarterbacks

Average kept past six seasons: 2.8
In - 3: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Frye.
Gone – Dalton Bell

Comment: It’s time for the Seahawks to make Frye the in-game backup and move Seneca Wallace to WR\Slash where he belongs. It would be good to get Frye some more snaps this week against the Faiders.

Running Backs
Average kept past six seasons: 5.2
In – 5: Julius Jones, Maurice Morris, Leonard Weaver, Owen Schmitt, Justin Forsett.
Gone – David Kirtman,
Wildcard - TJ Duckett

Comment: Kirtman and Duckett have looked the part at times, but a couple of 12-yard runs against the other team’s 3rd stringers isn’t enough to convince us, TJ. Besides, if they cut him, he’ll probably hang around for half the season anyway before somebody picks him up. Forsett would be snapped up immediately and has more upside.

And Shaun Alexander is still looking for a job if they have an injury…

Tight ends
Average kept past six seasons: 3.
In: John Carlson, Will Heller, Jeb Putzier.
Comments: Carlson should have a big year, and Putzier is a better player than most people think. We should see a lot more 2 TE sets from the Seahawks this year. This position is set.

Wide Receivers
Average kept past six seasons: 5.5
In - 5: Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram, Courtney Taylor, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne
PUP: Deion Branch,
PS - Michael Bumpus
Wildcard - Ben Obomanu

Comment: It’s time to just give up the fantasy that Branch will be ready for the season opener and PUP him already. This means Seneca Wallace will have to play a lot for the first 4-6 weeks, but the coaching staff is always saying he’d be a Pro Bowl WR if he played the position. It’s time to find out for sure.

Offensive line
Average kept past six seasons: 8.8
In- 9: Walter Jones, Mike Wahle, Rob Sims, Chris Spencer, Steve Vallos, Ray Willis, Sean Locklear, Mansfield Wrotto, Floyd Womack.

Comments: This unit seems pretty straightforward, but if it comes right down to it, I’d keep Chop over Wrotto because of his versatility and experience.

Total – OFFENSE – 25

DEFENSE

Defensive line
Average kept past six seasons: 9.3
In - 9: Brandon Mebane, Rocky Bernard, Red Bryant, Lawrence Jackson, Patrick Kerney, Darryl Tapp, Craig Terrill, Howard Green, Jason Babin
Gone: Baraka Atkins, Chris Cooper, Larry Tripplett.

Comments: Green and Babin have played well enough to earn a spots. Atkins has been a disappointment and Tripplett never got going after getting hurt. If Bryant gets healthy, this will be the team’s deepest unit.

Linebackers
Average kept past six seasons: 7.2.
In - 6: Lofa Tatupu, Leroy Hill, Julian Peterson, D.D. Lewis, Lance Laury, David Hawthorne.

PUP: Will Herring
Comment Hawthorne has earned a spot and may be the team’s first legit backup MLB in years. Herring will have to look awfully good in practice to unseat him in week 7.

Defensive backs
In - 9: Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings, Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Josh Wilson, Jordan Babineaux, C.J. Wallace, Kevin Hobbs, Jamar Adams.

Comments: This is the Seahawks deepest secondary ever. Adams can keep his spot for a while until Branch or Herring come off PUP. He’ll have less value to another team then and might clear waivers for the PS.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Average kept past six seasons: 3
In - 3:
Place Kicker: Olindo Mare
Punter: Ryan Plackemeier
Long Snapper – Jeff Robinson
Comment: Mare and Plack seem to have held off rookie challengers, and Robinson is the only guy out there to LS.

TOTAL DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS – 27

Total – 53

Obviously, the wildcard players (Obomanu and Duckett) will vie for the last spot. Adams might clear waivers, so he could be headed to the practice squad. If Wallace actually does get ready to play more WR, then Obomanu can be dumped in favor of Duckett and his $4.5 million in guaranteed money. The final pre-season game may just decide this issue. We’ll do a revisit after the Faiders game.
