What a difference a week makes.
One week after judging Charlie Frye too harshly, I have to say he was impressive in a pre-season week three performance against the Chargers in San Diego. While it’s true that no team runs its full defense in the pre-season games, Frye still looked the part of NFL quarterback, moving around in the pocket, finding open receivers and hitting them accurately. Except for one late throw to Logan Payne, his reads, timing and accuracy were spot on.
A week ago, we were talking about giving up on the guy to clear a roster spot for Justin Forsett or an extra WR. Today I have to say at times he looked Hasselbeck-like out there.
The Seahawks may just have found their QB of the future.
In other game news, Forsett had a drop-off after a couple of outstanding games, looking pretty ordinary out there. The offensive line blocked well, especially Ray Willis filling in for Sean Locklear, and Steve Vallos made a strong case for staying the starter at center. Chris Spencer needs to get healthy quick or he could even be a surprise cut next week. TJ Duckett looked good, but it was all against the third-string guys.
The game did little to sort out the morass at wide receiver. Logan Payne hurt himself with a couple drops, even though one of them could be argued as being Frye’s fault for delivering the ball late and allowing a Chargers DB to get a hand on the ball. Ben Obomanu continues to be the invisible man.
Except for RB and WR, the roster seems to be rounding out nicely and it’s obvious the Seahawks have a lot of depth and are strong just about everywhere. It should be an interesting 10 days as the cutdowns come and some of these key decisions are made.
Lofa Tatupu and Frye both suffered knee injuries, but neither looks to be too serious right now. MRI’s are scheduled for today.
